The Seven Veils of Mystery
Seven Veils of Mystery
The following outline are my notes from a video I shared recently about Juan Tamariz, one of the greatest card magicians who has ever lived. In the video, he talks about the Seven Veils of Mystery he uses to describe his approach to his practice of magic.
Seven Veils of Mystery
Mystery of love – love your art
Mystery of knowledge – the more you know, the deeper it is
Mystery of work - the more work the intense it is
Mystery of the energy – the feeling you give and get
Mystery of the truth - more truth creates deeper atmosphere
Mystery of the interior world – the deeper it is, the more they feel it
Mystery of love – love the audience the most important is the love to the other
“If your interior world is not interesting, you can be a good communicator. You can be a good showman but not a good artist.” -Juan Tamariz
The following is my application of Tamariz’ philosophy to my relationship with Argentine tango:
Seven Veils of Mystery
Mystery of love – Love tango. Love the milongas. Love the connection it helps create with yourself and other people. Love the dance. Love TO dance.
Mystery of knowledge – Learn about the music. Study it. Listen to it. Let it grow inside you. Learn about tango’s history and culture, it’s etiquettes and practices.
Mystery of work – You are communicating to another person without using words. If you want your conversations to have depth, you need to put in work. Take lessons. Practice. Get feedback. Learn how to give feedback.
Mystery of the energy – If tango is a feeling that you can dance, then put those feelings into your dance. Stop worrying about leading and following and making mistakes. Part of the magic of tango is that the mistakes often lead to new opportunities. Don’t worry about blame or fault. Create something new out of the unexpected. Don’t let the energy get blocked. Circulate it with your partner – with the whole dance floor. Let it flow.
Mystery of the truth - The truth of your dance is yours. Your “why”. Why do you dance tango? Put the answer to that question or the searching for the answer or the question itself into your dance. Share that with your partner. Look for their truth.
Mystery of the interior world – You are a deep well of thoughts, emotions and experiences. Reach into them. Observe them. Share them with your partner.
Mystery of love – Your partner has agreed to spend time with you in an intimate setting. Honor that sharing. Seek to give without expecting to receive in exchange. Abrazar es amor.
